I just have to say, I am part of the WMA community. This week my daughter introduced me to Facebook because a “friend” found her and checked to see if we had been at WMA. This has opened up a whole new world.
Having worked at WMA for nine years, the campus and the people were like home to me. I have missed knowing what the various cadets have been doing over the past 13 years since I moved to a new community to grow in my educational career.
I doubt that many people who graduate from a public high school could ever have that sense of community that exitst at WMA. All these students who come together in one small town, live through an experience like a military academy, and somehow stay connected over the years.
Still, I have hope. The kids I currently work with now develop a sense of community, also. There is so much need in our schools to assure that the students do have a sense of belonging, a sense of community, and even a sense of home. I am afraid that we are back to mass production education which is evaluated only in terms of numbers and not of people. WMA was people.
